Walk in a Rainstorm

One of my very favorite things I learned during my many years as a camp counselor was this simple phrase: “walk in a rainstorm.”
When everything is chaos & the world is falling all around you, people will be looking at leaders to set the pace.
With my campers, walking in a rainstorm quite literally meant walking in the rain from the soccer fields to find dry shelter under the shed or inside a neighboring teepee (yes, I lived in teepees for multiple summers in college).
With a global pandemic, walking in a rainstorm means something more symbolic, something more real: leaning first into faith rather than leading by fear.
It’s easy to hear the news of what we’re currently facing & want to erupt into full blown freak-out mode or recluse into a ball of anxiety. I’ve been on both ends of the spectrum, feeling every range of emotion & honestly, only feeding these doubts & worries with an unhealthy social media intake. I get it.
But in the midst of all the crazy, a clear small voice reminded me of those wet, muddy days in Branson, Missouri.
Panicked running only induced panicked running. Simple.
Calm walking gave an open invitation to dancing in the rain, laughing at wet socks & soggy toes & opened up the possibility of making memories instead of inspiring fear.
And so we walk.
We walk confidently into this season, calm & controlled, boldly knowing we aren’t walking alone.
We’re all in this together y’all.
And if we’re soaking wet & our boots are water logged by the end of it, at least we took a moment to look around & appreciate what’s truly important - the beauty of laughter, the magnitude of creation & the preciousness of time.
Walk, with steady, sturdy faith.
You never know who’s watching.
Come hell or high water, you’re never alone.
